Martin Smith MS, EdD

The over-arching goal of my work is to develop and publish effective, research-based educational materials and educator professional development models. Specifically, I focus on materials and strategies that are situated in authentic contexts and emphasize constructivism and reflective practice. I accomplish this through multiple campus, county, state, national, international, and agency-based collaborations. My current work focuses on applied research related to strategic initiatives within the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (e.g., safe and secure food supplies; sustainable natural resources; water quality, quantity, and security), with a particular emphasis on the 4-H Youth Development Program in California and nationally. Additionally, I have worked for the past 15 years on introducing and broadening the use of lesson study, a community-of-practice-based model of educator professional development to the landscape of nonformal education. This work was presented at the 2019 World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) annual conference in Holland; it will also be featured at the 2020 WALS conference in San Francisco. In my tenure at UC-Davis I have supervised 22 graduate students from science disciplines in education work through the School of Education, the department of Nutrition, the department of Human Ecology, and the School of Veterinary Medicine, have served on thesis and dissertation committees, and have mentored over 900 undergraduate students involved in translational research, development, and extension efforts.
